Society for the Study of Social Problems

Society for the Study of Social Problems
(SSSP)
A North American organization of sociologists, formed in 1951, as a body aiming to present a more radical and critical approach to deviance and social problems than the American Sociological Association. In its earliest days, it was dominated by labelling theory, as exemplified in, The Other Side (1963). The British National Deviance Conference was in part inspired by this organization, which is now a major part of American sociology. A good overview of its activities can be found in the review of its work published on the occasion of its twenty-fifth anniversary in the journal Social Problems (1976).
